Cobia come in all shapes and sizes. This little guy pictured above
with one of my return clients who was hoping for a keeper fish for
the grill but unfortunately the cobia were to small to keep. We did
have by the way the best shark bite I have had all year and caught
6 bull sharks, 2 black tips and 12 reef sharks!  Action packed trip!

5/2/12 OFF THE HOOK COBIA ON THE FLY!

What you are about to witness is an unreal catch on the fly by a good
friend of mine Raz Reid of Hilton Head Island. This huge cobia took
Raz close to a hour and half to land. (LITERARILY ON A SAND BAR!)
The fish bottomed out my 60 pound scale and I would guess she weighed
a few pounds over 60...maybe 65! Definitely the biggest I have ever
seen caught on a fly rod!

PLEASE NOTE this big female was released unharmed and will get a
chance to release all of those thousands of eggs she has in her big belly!

IN MY OPINION I think releasing a big fish every now and then could
really make a big difference in the stock of cobia that I have seen decrease
in our inshore waters over the last few years and I think many others
 would agree.

OFF THE HOOK conditions today! These are the days you really
look forward to and hope to see cobia cruising right below the surface.
We ended up only seeing one fish before the wind picked up and he was
just not interested. We finished up the trip with some great light tackle
action catching some reef sharks.

Fly Fishing For Cobia in Hilton Head

4/28/12 Pic Of The Day!
Today was my first trip to the Broad River and we were looking
to sight fish for cobia. In my opinion there is no better way to catch
a big cobia especially on a fly rod or spinning rod. Finding cobia in
the broad river can sometimes be like finding a needle in a haystack!
The conditions got perfect mid day and My client Mark Nutting had a
shot at his first cobia on the fly and unfortunately the fish was just not
in the mood to eat. We spent over 5 minutes throwing different flies to
the fish and just could not entice a strike. We also had several shots to
some very nice tripletail which were the first few that I have seen this
year as well. Even though we didn't boat a fish we still had a great day
and Mark can't wait to try again next year when he is back!
